In his classic The Country and Cty , Raymond Williams described the country in Hardy’s fictions as “border countryside”, a countryside represents ambivalence and conflicts, borders between “custom and education, the work and ideas, the love of place and experience of change.”In his novel
The Return of the Native , Hardy did focus on the reality of the dangers of nostalgia and resulting destruction of the return to countryside at the second half of 19th century. However, his situation was problematic: on one hand, he posed critique to the nostalgic return of Clym Yeo bright when the countryside idyll was no longer available; on the other hand, his framing of the countryside as the setting of the novel represented urban middle class’s ?? for countryside as the ideal landscape, the iconic image which represented their values, the power of property, and the aesthetic of the picturesque.

Values summarize the accumulated folk wisdom by which a society organizes and disciplines itself.And values are the precious reminders that individuals obey to bring order and meaning into their personal lives. Without values, nations, societies and individuals can pitch straight to hell.
